Out of Town Parallel Projects

9B in Diyarbakır
Diyarbakır Sanat Merkezi

September 20, 2005, 17.30-20.30

Panel: Biennial: Dislocation of Art

Participants: Daniel Bozkhov (artist), Khalil Rabah (artist), Cay Sophie Rabinowitz (art critic), Christian Rattemeyer (curator, art critic)

The speakers will talk about notions of geography, displacement, place and time in terms of international art biennials' emergence and reception in the countries they are organized in. The questions posed in the talk will touch upon how the biennial serves as a generator of ideas, meanings and values. Does the dislocation of art contain a desire for new utopias? Artists who work with ideas around location and notions of "being" and "acting" with a focus on the translation/transmission of meanings from one location to another, will speak about their works in this context.

September 21, 2005, 17.00-20.30

Panel: İstanbul – Diyarbakır: Cities, Art, Democracy

Participants: Carolee Thea (art critic), Otto Berchem (artist), Şener Özmen (artist)

The topics of the discussion will be public space, modernities and individual narratives in a time of accelerated globalization. Critics will discuss politics of resistance with the participating artists and explore how they conceive and experience the politics of local and international art practices.

Video documentation of the 9th International İstanbul Biennial will be screened on September 20-21, 2005, 14.00-17.00.
