International İstanbul Biennial events continue to take place with '9B Talks - IX' with the participation of the Italian architect group Gruppo A12.
The ninth lecture in the series of '9B Talks' realized within the 9th International İstanbul Biennial will take place on the 7th of May, Thursday at 18:30 pm. at the Theatre Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute with the participation of the Italian artist group Gruppo A12. The '9B Talks - IX', in which three members of the group Andrea Balestrero, Gianandrea Barreca ve Antonella Bruzzese is going to speak about their art practice, previous projects as well as their project for the İstanbul Biennial, will be free of charge and carried out with simultaneous translation.
Founded by a group of architects in Genoa in 1993, Gruppo A12 operates in the space between contemporary art, architecture and urbanism. Currently active between Genoa and Milan, Gruppo A12 consists of Nicoletta Artuso, Andrea Balestrero, Gianandrea Barreca, Antonella Bruzzese, Maddalena De Ferrari, Fabrizio Gallanti and Massimiliano Marchia.
Gruppo A12 has participated in architectural competitions, obtaining first prize for the requalification of the areas along the North Milan Railroad Cadorna-Bovisa, (with Stefano Boeri 1994), in the competition for a system of platforms for recycling waste (with Isabella Artuso 1996), in the "Opera prima" competition, for a building of 25 lodgings in Borghetto Lodigiano (1996) and in the competition "Europan 5" Biel/Bienne (1999). It has displayed its work at Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; ZKM, Karlsruhe; PS1 New York; Manifesta 3, Ljubljana. Gruppo A12 won in 2000 the SonderPreis at the MedienKunstPreis at ZKM, Karlsruhe and realized installations in various international biennials.
The group's works perform as fragmented and heterogeneous spaces rather than installations or sculptures. The works are constituted through a combination of research projects in the fields of architecture and urbanism with installations and graphic design and the new information technologies. In June 2000 Gruppo A12 participated to "VII the International Extension of Architecture, Biennial of Venezia" with the web project "parole" (with Udo Noll and Peter Scupelli), a dynamic archive of the contemporary city, that received the special prize "internationaler medienkunstpreis 2000". 'parole' evolves actively according to the material provided by the users of the website resisting any authorship, carrying out the spatial principles of the group on the web space.
The group's main focus is on the subversion of the architectural process linked with the research on the transformation of the contemporary city and on the critical role of architecture in relationship to its cultural and social context. The group inverts the standard architectural sequence which they define as an initial spatial configuration in the form of visual plans and drafts transformed into a set of rules transmitted to other professional fields producing a space. This methodology disavows the disparity between the thought project and the realized building, namely the process of building itself.
In order to foreground the creative evolution of a space, Gruppo A12 collaborates with individuals from a wide range of professions involved in the production of a space. Thus the group emphasizes negotiation, communication and flux in architecture together with the sense of community and the process of 'trial and error'. The use of random, junk material serves the same purpose providing the basis of an architectural experience as a perpetual movement of solution-finding and discovering new functions rather than simply recycling the material. Thus the space created as a result of the set of rules and functions produced by the collaboration between the community of producers and the working with the material is represented visually in the final step.
