Art, City and Politics in An Expanding World

Writings from the 9th International İstanbul Biennial

Art, City and Politics in an Expanded World presents the reader with a mind map of the 9th International İstanbul Biennial. It represents the perspectives of academics, artists, art critics and curators, from İstanbul and beyond, on art, the city and politics. This compilation of articles aims to lay bare the reflections, in public space, of alternative modernities that weave individual narratives against the totalising modern project, assumed to reproduce itself through globalisation. Art, City and Politics in an Expanded World discusses the hope for passionate critique and a politics of resistance in public space, against the daily temporal and spatial practices of modernity, and the dominant discourse that reinforces them.
Included in the compilation are Giorgio Agamben, Asu Aksoy and Kevin Robins, Marius Babias, Galit Eliat, Charles Esche and Vasıf Kortun, Orhan Esen, Mika Hannula, Nikos Papastergiadis, Saskia Sassen, Nermin Saybaşılı, Shepherd Steiner, Uğur Tanyeli, xurban_collective, Mary Zournazi (Interview with Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau). The publication also presents 29 photographs by Gabriele Basilico.
