Misafirperverlik Alanı

Free Kick

The Hospitality Zone will host Free Kick, a local exhibition curated by Halil Altındere with the participation of 35 artists with different backgrounds from different areas of Turkey.

The majority of the works voice all that was suppressed, was left on the surface, was postponed, was silent in the history of the collective memory of Turkey, thus the exhibition searches for the possibility of reinterpreting a minor history through the aspects of those actual moments, the experiences, the memories and the fictive narratives... The exhibition enables the audience and the artists to take a 'free kick' at moments when the linearity of time has been broken by aspects of violence on the public; and form narratives that have been shaped by fear and trauma.

Across the segments that separate themselves from each other as well as complement each other, the artists of the exhibition explore issues of uniform, suicide, doubt, criminalization, prohibition, eroticism, the sacred (and) idol, and the experience of past and present in diverse ways and languages, notion of army and soldiering, violence, the notion of border and limitation as well as the notions of torture, obedience and disobedience, fear and doubt, oppression and rebellion.

Participating artists: Songül Boyraz and Peter Höll, Erkan Özgen, Nurullah Görhan, Ferhat Özgür, Hatice Güleryüz, Ahmet Öğüt, Hüseyin Karabey, Belmin Söylemez, Demet Yoruç, Merve Berkman, Cengiz Tekin, Gülşah Kılıç, Neşe Çoğal, Erinç Seymen, Murat Tosyalı, Ramazan Bayrakoğlu, Gülsün Karamustafa, Canan Şenol, Vahit Tuna, Bashir Borlakov, Özlem Günyol, Selim Birsel, Hakan Onur, Taner Ceylan, Mustafa Kunt, Berat Işık, Fatma Çiftçi, Burak Delier, Köken Ergun, İnci Eviner, Hunera Berxwedani, Nejat Satı, Sefer Memişoğlu and Osman D. Bingöl.

Free Kick creates a new area where non-conformist political voices can be heard within the larger framework of the 9th International İstanbul Biennial. In this ambivalent zone, this audacious exhibition aims a free kick at the established modes of art production in Turkey and provokes the viewers to reconsider their stances with regard to this fresh visual idiom.

A bilingual exhibition catalogue which includes essays by Şener Özmen and Süreyya Evren and a special interview realized by Şener Özmen with Halil Altındere will be available at the exhibition venue.
